They're gonna cut my neck open all the way to my spine, pull out a bulging disc, and replace it with a piece of bone from a dead dude. I should be fine though. ;)
-
Good luck.
When is this happening?
-
Good luck.
When is this happening?
Next week.
-
I hope that goes well Rage.
-
I hope it goes well and wishing you an easier recovery. My sister had spinal surgery and was cut open from the top of her back down to the lower lumbar area. Had 2 rods fused to her spine. People always comment on what incredible posture she has which cracks us up. You can't slouch when you've got steel rods in your back. :green:
Check in when you can and let us know how it went.

Good luck dude!!
About 10 years ago, I worked at a machine shop where I made titanium vertebrae. Suprised they did'nt give one one of those.
-
Thanks guys. Surgery sucks, but I hurt too bad to care. ;)
-
Good luck :santa: Ho Ho Ho
Tell them you want the disc they take out you can keep it in a jar
-
Parts you crack me up
-
Good luck Rage.
Hope it will do you a lot of good.
-
GL, rage.
-
Tell them you want the disc they take out you can keep it in a jar
I agree, see if you can get that. It is yours after all.
Am curious to know how you injured yourself.

Like when they fix your car you can tell them you want the used bits
-
Exactly!
-
Someone already asked me to mail him my fucked up disc, but I didn't know if they'd let me have it.

Also, fixed. :eyebrows:

Hoping all goes well and you make a speedy recovery Rage.
-
Thanks. I should. I've had worse than a hole in my neck so it won't even bring me off my feet. ;)
-
You're right about this being something you undertake only because you HAVE to, not for the fun of it. Hope everything goes to plan; that the bone graft heals up well, and most importantly that it corrects the problems you were having before.
(Keeping the part that was changed out as a souvenir? That made me smile.)
-
I did that with my wisdom teeth, but I don't think I would keep a disc.
Besides, the doctor may need to send it to a pathologist to make sure nothing's wrong.
-
Will you have to stay in the hospital overnight after you have this done?
-
Is the bulging disk from an injury?
-
Will you have to stay in the hospital overnight after you have this done?
This kind of surgery would need more than one night in the hospital I think, given the area that will be operated on.
Is the bulging disk from an injury?
Yes, I want to know as well!
-
Bon chance, mon ami.

I would have thought so as well, but they are doing more and more operations as day surgeries, so I wondered.
-
I thought that yours would be an overnight stay for your ankle surgery, Callaway. I had jaw surgery and was in hospital for three nights. To have my appendix out, that was an overnight stay as well.
TMI? Ah well.

TMI? Ah well.
I arrived at the surgery center about an hour and a half before the operation, which took about two hours, then I was in the recovery room for about an hour and a half, then they were ready for my husband to take me home.

That is a very short time. If you had general anaesthetic, I wonder if you felt groggy for the rest of the day.

A little tired, but I had the Michael Jackson drug, Propofol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propofol) along with Fentanyl and Versed, so the effects wore off pretty quickly.
-
I think your surgery is tomorrow, Rage? Just wanted to say I'm thinking the best of thoughts for you.
-
Good luck, Rage.
:crossed:
-
Thinking of you and wishing a speedy recovery, Rage. :)
-
Wanting to say the same as the three ladies before me.
Goodluck.
-
When they operate on you, are they going to use a
SWORD TO FUCKING CUT YOU WIDE OPEN?
-
Wishing you well Rage.

^ :plus: That's hilarious!

This is bullshit. I was expecting the MRI data to come back and show something that wasn't there. Unfortunately its something worse. It appears I have shitty "connective tissue" and surgery isn't going to fix it. He just gave me a lecture about the dangers of opiates and living with pain and wrote me a script.
Living with pain. What a fantastic christmas present.
-
Shit, that is a lousy outcome indeed.
-
Doctors are always into that living with pain shit unless of course it's them
-
Indeed. I think its time for a second opinion.
-
Oh man, I am so sorry to hear that Rage. :( I know someone who got the same dx, now I just have to remember who and what they did about it. I'll check back in when I remember who it was :facepalm2: and I talk to them.
-
Nothing I can do according to this doctor. Its just degenerative and i'll rot away over time.
I'm not accepting that though. I'll try some more doctors.
-
Indeed. I think its time for a second opinion.
Or even a third after that
-
Doctors are always into that living with pain shit unless of course it's them
As Howard Hughes proved, trying to "live with pain" is total BS. After his crash in the XF-11 in 1946, he began to use morphine to cope with the pain of his injuries. He lived for 30 years with chronic pain, and ultimately died of kidney failure. Many doctors agree, that although his death was atributed to opiate addiction, if he WASN'T on morphine, he would've died sooner.

He lived to what 71?

Damn near, he died before his 71st birthday.
-
So you didn't have surgery Rage?
I agree on searching for a second opinion.

So did they find this out after the surgery or did they decide not to do it after all based on this MRI?
MRIs can be very useful tools, but they don't always tell the whole story. For example, my OCD (the hole in my talus) was much larger than it appeared to be on the MRI.
I know Vitamin C is supposed to be good for fixing connective tissues. I started taking 500 mg tablets of it myself recently.
I wish I knew something else to help besides this and ice and rest.
-
Have you tried glucosamine sulphate, Rage? I've used it when I was having a lot of knee pain, and it helped — not a lot, but enough to make it worthwhile.
I know this is going to be controversial, but here goes: About 10 years ago, a friend came to stay with us who was a complete vegan. No animal products, not even honey. I adopted the same diet for about 6 weeks, just to see what it was like. All my chronic muscle and joint pains, including back pain, disappeared completely. My cholesterol also dropped, and my blood haemoglobin actually went up (must have been all the broccoli).
I wasn't able to stay vegan after the friend left. Dammit, I loves me some red meat, and am fortunate to live in a country that has a plentiful, cheap and tasty supply of it. But if worse comes to worst, it could be something for you to experiment with.
Oh and also, I consulted several orthopaedic surgeons before finding the one who performed the surgery that fixed my knee problem. Two of them were total assholes. Keep trying until you find a doc that will help you.
-
I also use a Glucosamine Chondroitin MSM blend called Osteo Bi-Flex Triple Strength and I think it helped my joints be less painful. It helps repair cartilage.

No, they didn't operate based on the results. They were sure of what the results would be BEFOREHAND, which they weren't. They didn't find what they were looking for, so they threw their hands up and said they didn't know.
Its frustrating. :facepalm2:

dead dudes are cool

There is a Swedish - of course - word: "dödshäftig". It means literally "death cool". 8)
