I have no functional guns but there is a big knife or axe within reaching distance from almost anywhere i n my house :zoinks: Including under my pillows and at least 2 on me at all times

Guns suck.
Guns don't suck, they're really nothing more than toy or a tool that can be used recreationally or as a tool to provide food and protection. Confrontational assholes who have to hide behind a gun to prove themselves suck tremendously.

Yes, they are. And cars are made to transport people. And here in Sweden about 500 people are killed by cars every year and 10-20 people are killed in gun crimes, most of them by illegal guns. So...are the guns bad or the people who are using them? The cars or the people who are using them?

Yes, they are. And cars are made to transport people. And here in Sweden about 500 people are killed by cars every year and 10-20 people are killed in gun crimes, most of them by illegal guns. So...are the guns bad or the people who are using them? The cars or the peole who are using them?
That's a stupid counter-argument because guns don't have any other uses except for killing live beings. Oh yeah, you can take it out and shoot it at targets and what not but the fact remains that it's primary use is to kill things. That's what they are manufactured for. Obviously you can kill using a number of different objects that weren't necessarily made for that purpose ::)

But cars were never made for killing people, yet they kill 500 Swedes a year.
And not to be cynical but: do you really feel sorry for animals getting killed for being meat or criminals being killed by law-abiding citizens? I don't.

Who cares? That's the fault of people not guns themselves as they use a car in an incorrect way. The same can't be said for guns because killing is what they're meant to do.
Also, it's not people's place to judge who the "criminal" or who the "law-biding citizen" is as it's usually more complicated than that in life Lit. I do feel sorry for animals getting killed for meat hence why I'm a vegeterian but I'm not imposing my views on you with this, so I don't see why you should bring it up in the first place as it's pretty irrelevant.

Guns are also used for self defense almost a million times a year in America. The vast amjority of these times, not a single shot was fired. The would-be criminal sees the gun and makes a hasty retreat. So much for your "theory". ::) ::) ::)

Me, I'd rather not get killed at all thank you very much :zoinks: Just to humour you though, using a pickaxe or a knife introduces a personal element that a lot of people wouldn't be willing to deal with, not to mention such attacks are also probably less likely to be fatal. It's easier to be detached and make a hasty decision with a gun while knives and such are messy. Not to mention axes and knives do have other intended uses. Guns don't. Which brings me back to my main point.
You can't escape the fact that guns are made for killing things. Whatever you may argue, that is their primary function.

I don't quite understand your logic, you're saying that a 1 foot long 3 inch wide pointed metal shaft being driven into your chest cavity would be less likely to be fatal than a 1/4" chunk of lead?

I would like to see the ratio of hours that guns are used, and the hours that cars are used in total. And then compare the mortality range.

I don't really get why some people are blindly against them. Sure in the wrong hands they can do harm, but in today's world especially in the dangerous areas, it's essential that you have one for self-protection. If bint lived in such a dangerous area without a gun, she will more likely be burgled at gunpoint, raped and either beaten or shot dead. She would be completely defenseless and basically handing them everything on a silver plate.
If where I am was more dangerous and guns were legalised, I'd get one without a 2nd thought. Thankfuly gun crime in Ireland is uncommon and where I am is fairly quiet, so I have no need of them at this very moment.
Ban conventional weapons and humans will just find more inventive and possibly more destructive ways to kill one another. No guns? Use knives! No knives? Use planks of wook with nails! No planks of wood with nails? Grind their faces down with a handheld sander! You can't take that violent streak from us. :zoinks:

You've got something there Bint.
The farther the distance from the one aimed for, the less it looks like killing, and the more it looks like a computer game. Playing 'god' with real lives. that don't look real.
I don't know how effective a gun, pistol or revolver will be in a fight in a busy environment, or when threatened in a crowd. You can't do the distant thing in a crowd, and aiming for the right person is hard then.
On the other hand, when really going beserk, I don't think there is a personal element in stabbing someone with a knife either. It's just blind furious rage then. And a bystander can be hurt easily too then.
I'm not favouring guns. I do find gun statistics intriguing though. What does it say, when percentage of gun owning in Canada is not that much lower than in the US, but the percentage of gun casualties is a lot lower?
BTW. Heard today that the UK is the most violent nation in the world. Even beating South Africa. I was amazed.
