Title: Safty
Post by: Parts on June 30, 2009, 07:02:13 PM
how safe are you when you do stuff around the house.  I suck at it I was outside cutting trees with a chainsaw wearing shorts no gloves,no hat, no goggles no Kevlar chaps nothing .  But at work it's safety first but at home it was only recently I began wearing safety goggles some time.  It's like a split personality of something I know all the OSHA rules too.  How about everyone else?

I'm bizarrely overly safe to the point where I've never broken or sprained anything, never electrocuted myself or gotten harmfully burned or cut. Never quite figured it out - I was a chickenshit little kid and the stupidly safety-conscious aspect of that seems to have stuck without my ever trying.

I tend to be overly cautious, mainly because I am so accident prone it isn't even funny.  :P

I routinely unplug drill motors, Dremels and Porta Bands etc before changing tips or bits. I have 4 eyes anyway so I only put on supplementary eye protection where needed. I have been working Flight Lines, Heavy Industry and shooting guns for over 30 years so I am pretty good with hearing protection although I have lost some hearing at the high end.

I was always the sort of kid who didn't jump from the treehouse or hold onto the lit fireworks, and who always saw the point of wearing a bicycle helmet, but although I've never broken or sprained anything, I've been burned and cut plenty of times.  Burns and cuts don't bother me; it's only more serious injuries that I worry about.  I also take precautions like wearing nitrile gloves while soldering, so that I don't get lead on my hands, and I'm happy to put on a dust mask or goggles whenever they're appropriate to the situation.

Despite this, my mum for many years kept telling people that I had a poor sense of danger, and it's only recently, after repeatedly correcting her, that she seems to be getting it into her head that I'm actually a very cautious person, and always have been.

I've been cut plenty, just not in a major way. Even the time I split one of my fingernails on a scroll saw in shop class, it didn't even bleed.

I have to chase everyone out of the kitchen when I'm cooking. Otherwise I cut myself, burn myself, spill things, and let pots boil over while trying to listen/talk to whoever is there. Can not multitask, not at all.

I used to work with water and electricity. :o If it weren't for trip switches, I would have been dead a hundred times over.

Unlike some in my trade I have never been hit with anything harder than 120 volts. But 120 hurts enough that I don't want to get hit with 277 or 480 volts.

Safety is spelled with an e :P

I tend to be a bit fluid with my safety measures...It depends on what I'm doing really...

parts has his own unique spelling system. :)

I am not scared of heights at all, so I have probably been a bit unsafe in that regard.
