Why do they do the weird things they do. They are having some form of vigil on the Green downtown which they seem to have once or twice a year where they blindfold a couple people and sit them in a bamboo cage. This goes on all weekend. I know they went through a lot but I find this a bizarre practice. My uncles were in WW2 and Korea they used to go to reunions and such but nothing like this.

Never heard of that practice. Are the guys in the cage Vietnam veterans too?

It does appear to have become a subculture doesn't it?
I mean people do all kinds of wierd shit in subcultures. Look at cults. Scientology. Religious people.(snake handlers)

They looked to young veterans maybe but not that era the ones under the tents in chairs probably were though

I know of a few people I wouldn't mind putting in a cage. 8)
I don't understand the need so many of them seem to have to "re-live" this crap, I would think that would make it harder, my grandfather was in WWII and wouldn't even talk about it.

I think because Vietnam was a war that happened in a different time and there were a lot of protests and bad publicity, such as Jane Fonda saying that soldiers were war criminals etc, and that they were lying about being tortured.
The previous wars were all about protecting your country, and part of the culture and psyche was about patriotism.
Whereas Vietnam came at a time, where there were a lot more different societal impacts.
Another thing to is, the culture in the previous wars was not to talk about how bad it was, move on. Whereas Vietnam was at a time where people spoke out and expressed their feelings about what happened.
And I think that is a good thing. Vietnam veterans are always seen to be like they never experienced war. They were subjected to a lot of crazy shit too.
Culturally with previous wars, men who were fucked up, just beat the fuck out of their wives and children and went down to the 'female free' bars and became alcoholics. Life was all about 'mens business' shutting up and covering up your feelings and emotions.

Soldiers in WWII volunteered and returned as heroes, but soldiers in Vietnam were conscripted and returned as villains. It seems natural to me that they'd want more people to sympathise with their situation and to raise awareness of what they went through.
