I never give eye contact IRL either.. so it's pretty natural :/
-
You do very well on camera
-
I did that about 10 times I felt like an idiot I looked into the camera and went red for some reason, it's not even peoples eyes :/
-
I subbed.
I used to feel like an idiot doing the videos, but now I've got used to it. I don't bother with a script, I just turn the cam on; I'm beyond caring.

Yeah but people say my voice is disgusting, so I have to try a bit harder :p And I stutter also so that will be a problem.
-
Yeah but people say my voice is disgusting...
You voice is NOT 'disgusting' in the least. It is authoritative and clear spoken. I rather liked your voice. The nerves were obvious though because you were gabbling a bit and I could see your discomfort.
You deliver your lines something like a school teacher... but then, you do have Aspergers and that is a trait, or so I understand - I do it also... with me, I tend to lecture at people rather than converse with them - lol - and I'm not saying that was your problem in the video... just that I recognise I'm far from perfect in my delivery myself. Crumbs, this is all tempting me to do a YouTube also :o
Like you, I do not adlib. I'd probably write myself a short script and either memorise it or read it like you were doing.
-
I'd like to see a Kosmo & Fiona video collaboration someday. That would be cool!
-
Well done Fiona. I can't stand to be on camera... a photograph is bad enough, but a video where I have to talk... :hide:
It makes me nervous just thinking about it.
It also makes me feel kind of bad... like I feel the need to give you a hug because you just went through that.
-
It's very well done. :)
-
You aspurgiz the funny way.
Nice vid.
-
Well done, I am sure it will help promote your site/forums. I can understand you just fine.

You sound panicked to be honest if anything, your speech was a little too quick for my liking. It was probably over-prepared as well, never read out a speech verbatim. Just outline your speech instead.
-
You looked fine in the video but what do I know. I can't read body language very well so lot of aspies come off as normal in the videos.
But you did talk a little too fast. I talk fast too. But it was hard to understand what word you said in there but I knew it was "Aspergers."
-
I liked it a lot. :plus:
But Aspergers sounded like you said it Asperjers. ??
-
She did.

Are you a stand up comedian or something? You do realise that I have aspergers don't you?

You can't really tell by looking.

Yes. I also know, contrary to popular belief, that all these skills can be acquired with practise. The best public speakers in most cases began as the worst.

You're having difficulties in your public speaking classes I presume.

Asperger's or not, ToreOff gave you good advice there. Aspergers does not matter in this. This is something that can be learned - and we on the Spectrum can learn very well. I'm Autistic and I have acted on stage (a nightmare - and judged to be quite wooden but with some dramatic power), delivered presentations (judged best in class), and acted on film (much better to do than the stage because you have time to think things through more). I am a DXed Autistic.
Personally, seeing how you obviously were not enjoying the experience... I think you showed courage in what you did :)
Being defensive here though and excusing yourself because of your Aspergers... is a bit of a pity though and, IMHO, a bit of a mistake. Every Aspie and Autistic is different. Unlike many NTs, I am not microphone or moving camera sensitive (though I am still camera sensitive). A lot of NTs are... indeed most are. Its not just Aspies, Fiona :)
I write this intending it to be in a genuinely friendly way. :)

Of course, but nothing that is insurmountable. My main weakness is lack of practise.

Why not practice by expounding your views to the internet?

Agreed. Hadron on YouTube.
If that was Fiona's first time on YT doing a speech like that, I think she did a brilliant job. :)
-
Well i'm not usually as bad, but people were going on about what a disgusting accent I had and thats what made me lose confidence.
Some of my older vids are fine as I didn't care what I sounded like.

You sound great... really :)
-
Disgusting accent? That is a horrible thing to say.
I rather like the New Zealand accent since I have heard you speak it.
-
I like accents. Except southern US... that shit is annoying.

But your accent is awesome
-
How many people say your accent is bad? If few, they're assholes. Assholes tend to have different opinions than everyone else. That's how I spot one.
-
To be honest, I've never been a fan of the NZ accent, but that's just me and my problem, no one else's.
One thing that I find weird personally is when you hear and American accent on tv its okay, when you hear and Australian accent on tv its okay, but if a show has both American and Australian then the Australian accents just sound weird.
Go figure.
-
I've known 2 Aspegers people, and 1 person who had OCD and Anxiety who all had american like accents...Even though they were all Australian and had never been to the US.

When did you meet my kids? ;)
-
Oh really?
-
Thought it would be from watching too much tv.

Many reasons:
- I have people irl to practise on, and failing that anyone can grab a mirror.
- I am flu-filled now so can't do my best speech
- I have no microphone
- Privacy

Poor excuses:
- mirrors are a poor substitute and people irl don't always tell you what they are thinking
- you have permanent flu?
- you can buy one for £1.99
- fair enough

I never give excuses, just reasons.
- People on Youtube tell you even less than those irl. Plus I am actually doing classes with people who are total experts, the guy running it is actually a former World Champion.
- Seems like it :( Its the first couple of weeks so everyone gets it.
- Not in Durham you cant, and a 1.99 microphone tends to be crappy at best.
- Glad you agree

That's how Pandora and I say it too. I thought the video was fine.

Mostly, but our oldest had an American teacher in his first yeah of early intervention at Mentone Autistic School (Now called Southern Autistic School). So that took years of correction by us to get rid of most of that.
-
cute video :)
-
Hey gal, you're doing good. Keep fighting the good fight, and remember how many of us are going through it along with you. Might make it easier to go on camera.
