This has always been a dream for me and with the other green topic getting so many responses I was wondering if others here have ever considered it. I even saw a book on being self sufficient on just 5 acres that's on my list of books to get.

I've thought about it. A lot. One of my recurring fantasies in living in a post apocolyptic world... a'la "I am Legend" minus all the zombies. And, it'd be nice to have my family there.
I watched this the other day... they take two complete assholes and make them live off the grid for 30 days. The two people are really, really aggravating... but it's related.

I would love to live this way though.

I have gone as far as researching do it yourself wind turbines . I can't find the site now but they go into the whole idea of making them yourself and sell big magnets for the generators. The whole self sufficiency thing appeals to be a great deal so much so in fact that if I was not married I would be one of those survivalists living in the woods. Before I got married I had thought of disappearing . It is one of the reasons I study so many different things it takes a really good generalist to pull it off.

I've always had fantasies about disappearing like that. In general I hate people.

We could be neighbors in the Rockies we'd get along fine as long as your house was at least 10 miles away and the closest one to me

I did the same thing, building it looked fairly simple, my problem would be setting it up. ::)

My dream is an earthship, I would love to build one of those homes.

i've done it, although not as a long term thing. i used to live on the land four times a year, for between two weeks and a month, in a bender, with wood-burning stoves, and a tap (if we were lucky). the only thing which we couldn't do was grow our own food, cos we had different sites and didn't stay long enough to grow anything. :(
i know quite a few people who live like this permanently, and would probably be doing so myself, if it weren't for the fact that i'd feel vulnerable as a single female doing so.
