Title: Free message board hosted on your domain.
Post by: Mr Smith on September 22, 2008, 05:25:30 AM
I am wanting a message board for my domain, but i'm not much of a programmer. What do I have to do to go about getting this?

(I just want to be able to direct something to my domain... like to maybe aspergersgirl.com/forum  ) I can't seem to find any service that tells me how to do this, i keep getting sites that want to give me some stupid other subdomain to direct it to)

The simplest one to set up is probably YaBB (http://www.yabbforum.com/), a Perl-based forum script (SMF developed as a PHP version, so its pretty similar to this one in layout and functionality). NO SQL database required.

So you download that and upload it... do I have to code? I don't really get it.. am i designing the forum? I see it needs perl on the server.. that will cost me per month.. is there no way I can get a forum and point it to aspergersgirl.com/forum?

No coding required, you just upload it and install it following the instructions. I don't know of any free forum providers that you'd be able to redirect to your domain, sorry.  :-\

hmmm... I'll need to weigh up the cost of hosting it.

Will that be able to host your forum software? Will everything to do with the forum be saved to my server? won't it run out of room?

I really wish I could piggyback of another server that holds it all.. maybe i'll have to go with a subdomain of a forum offering service.

that should hold it comfortably, unless your forum becomes very large.  8)

hmm, what about backing up and stuff? I still really don't know how this works..

the forum has its own backup utility, or you could simply back everything up periodically using FTP.

It seems that they actually have a forum script integrated, so you may not need to faff around much. Though the script might not be any good, of course.

hmm, I'll probably do a manual backup. I think i'll upgrade my account so it supports forum scripts.

Also how do I change my WHOIS information? Someone told me it's giving out all my details.

you need a private registration, it costs a few $ a year but its definitely worth it. you should be able to arrange that through your registrar.

You could use someone like godaddy, for example.

When registering a domain name you can make the registration private through Domains by Proxy. Their name is exposed instead of yours. See Callaway's link.

To hide the WHOIS? I've replaced my who is with bogus information, but I will look into something like that, But I'm happy with 50 webs and already have paid for my domain.

Yes, to hide your WHOIS information.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I'll probably end up going with what Duncvis posted and upload my own stuff. I don't mind paying $50 pa for something I'm passionate about.
People on other boards suggested phpbb, any reason why that would be better?

Alex Plank uses it.

Would php bb be supported with the plan I posted earlier in this thread? (I'm a n00b)

I don't know a hell of a lot about phpbb, but from what little I've heard, isn't it full of holes and can be hacked into easily?

Yes. Its a script kiddie magnet.

It would, but it requires an SQL database, and the allowance you get is tiny. Also see above comment - personally I wouldn't recommend it.

I'm assuming that you need a testing server to set up the forums, man this is going to be long work, updating to the server for every test.

Question, I haven't started on any  dynamic content for my site yet.  How much programming will a message board require? What about errors that turn up etc?
Title: Re: Free message board hosted on your domain.
Post by: duncvis on October 01, 2008, 06:34:38 AM
It shouldn't require any programming, at most setting up a couple of scripts with straightforward instructions. Have a look at the installation files and see what you think - the YaBB support forums should have answers already to any common issues.

When I upgraded my account, it came with a simple machines forum. I wouldn't mind using that, it's just that it's set index to the forum as opposed to the page that I want to use as index. I'm afraid if I change the name of the forum page it will mess everything up. I'm really in over my head with this.

There we go, changed the name now it's messed up.

Hang on, I think it worked. I think my problem is with the people who own the web server. I'll get back to this thread in a few days. I'm working on a mail to PHP form. It will take forever to get it working.

try this - upload it to your smf folder and run it through your browser.
