Question for the Aussies...
« on: July 26, 2008, 02:10:22 PM »
Do people from Eastern Australia and people from Western Australia have different accents?
I came to this world with nothing
and I leave with nothing but love,
everything else is just borrowed.

Fuck it, we'll do it live.

God, this is a stupid question. Even Pyraxis, my intellectual superior, thinks so.

People from the country have slightly broader drawl.
Adelaide was settled not as a colony and so they sound more English.
By and large though the answer is "No"
The reason for it is that when all Australia was colonised, the little kids playing together is the streets all with a plethora of accents and came from all over England. They chose to seek out a shared identity, knowingly or not, (probably in an effort to fit in and find something they could claim as their own in this new land) and within a few generations, a shared cultural identity and accent was born. It has evolved over time but has evolved in a uniformed way.

Hope that helps.
I2 today is not i2 of yesteryear. It is a knitting circle. Those that participate be they nice or asshats know their place and the price to be there. Odeon is the overlord

.Benevolent if you toe the line.

Think it is I2 of old? Even Odeon is not so delusional as to think otherwise. He may on occasionally pretend otherwise but his base is that knitting circle.

Censoring/banning/restricting/moderating myself, Calanadale & Scrapheap were all not his finest moments.

Yes, but it is hardly noticeable. I wouldn't be able to explain the differences either.

I can identify a Queensland accent sometimes. They also use different terms (WA=school bag, QLD= port).

GA (from Victoria) says casstle, I say cahstle (castle, don't know if I wrote that well).

Yes. QLDers don't speak any form of English that I'm familiar with. WAers are better, but VICies are the best :)  (though I've not been to Adelaide...So I reserve final judgement).

My little dose of arrogance :)

I'm from Victoria and I pronounce it "cahstle", so I think that just makes GA odd.

Isn't GA from Geelong way? Or is it that he just follows Geelong?

Either way it explains everything.  ;)
