Has anyone heard a fox scream?
« on: June 25, 2008, 12:57:15 AM »
I kept hearing this scream over and over again, so I went outside to investigate.

There's a fox, standing in the middle of the road, that keeps screaming.

I thought it might be hurt, but it does not appear to be injured.

Why is it screaming?

I mean, why do foxes scream?

In case someone wonders what it sounds like, here is a video that sounds pretty close to what I am hearing:

The foxes around here scream a lot some nights, but are quiet on other nights.

Wow, that's very interesting, Tesla.  Thanks.

Yes, both of these could be good reasons why it was screaming like that.

I saw three foxes together a few nights ago when I was out walking, so that makes sense since this one was alone as far as I could see.

The foxes around here scream a lot some nights, but are quiet on other nights.

That was the first time I had ever heard a fox scream before, so at first I thought it might be a child or a woman screaming but being stopped by some bad person, or maybe possibly an injured dog.  There was no way I could just stay inside without at least trying to figure out whether or not I needed to call the police.

Sounds like the wilhelm scream.  O_o

Sorry, but I don't know what the wilhelm scream is.

We had a female fox that lived nearby and reasons unknown would do her screaming or shrieking at night.  It took us a while to figure out what it was.   Until we saw her in broad daylight chasing the squirrels attracted to my birdfeeders.  It's quite unforgettable to hear that coming out of the woods after dark.

It really does sound a lot like the Wilhelm scream.

Thanks.

I'm glad that I went outside and investigated what it was, else I would still be wondering if someone was injured.

Strange sound isn't it?

Coyotes around here, more and more each year. You can hear them sing everytime the fire whistle goes off.
