From 1749 to 1752 a surge of seizure like movements, talking in tongues and such went through some Dutch churches. (If I recall right, it wasn't only in the Netherlands, but can't find the back up for that now)
There have been all kinds of speculations what would have caused it. A fungus in the rye? It was a couple of wet years. Some disease in bovines, spreading weird toxins via meat? Or "plain" contagiousness of a fad?
Pro's and con's for all theories.
And as sudden as it came, it went again too.
