i'm with your daughter, parts - i much prefer black olives. but i love olives of any description.
my favourites are turkish breakfast olives, cos they're "chewier", and not a salty/strong as others. but then calamata olives have a lot going for them, and stuffed olives. i do my own "salad", mixing olives with olive oil, with garlic, chillies and lemon in a kilner jar, and let the flavours mix for a while. yum...
