New buildings
« on: April 29, 2008, 03:44:10 PM »
Why do they have to build all this shit without any character.  This is a new hotel that just opened up in town it's fucking hideous not only that they are building another one down the street. Whatever happened to character in architecture  this looks like some sort of disaster relief temporary housing. It was marsh land before. Regional differences in architectures are disappearing leaving  us with one bland look where ever you go.  Is this sad condition happenings around the world?   Look at the second photo all wood construction what a fire trap even with sprinklers :soapbox:

Old buildings have more character.

Although not all.

Certainly not these Communist era ones:

I bet the wood-framed one will get a stucco coating on the outside, or fake brick or something else to make you forget about all the kindling in the framework.

There's a pre-fab building going up just a mile down the road from me.  It's concrete, which is good, but I'm still amazed at how one day it's a cleared lot and then by the end of the next day it's got three stories of outside walls standing, with temporary braces on the inside.  This was done with humongous multi-elbowed cranes.  The next day, it had its fake brick exterior attached.

Holy crap!  They make fake stucco?  What is it, pre-stucco'ed panels, or some kind of injection-molded vinyl stuff shaped like stucco?

I hate it when society tears down old buildings and puts up new ones.

It doesn't look very durable.  Are there any recurring natural disasters in that area?  Builders and buyers should read the story of the three little pigs more often.  Whenever I've seen builders working on an extension for one of the houses around here or building a new house somewhere, it's been solid concrete blocks faced with roughcast and with a metal foil moisture barrier.  I don't know of any buildings that are all-wood construction here; wood's mainly just used for roofs and flooring.

Around here wood is the primary building product used in residential housing for which it works fine.  Aon this scale on the other hand I belie it to be totally inappropriate because of the sheer size and use of the building  it will be plaqued with maintenance problems and threat of fire

Wood here rots eventually and has to be replaced.  We had all the wood in our roof with the exception of the support beams replaced last year, and the undersides of the eaves lined with PVC panels, plus had it re-tiled at the same time.  We had PVC fitted around the windows too when we had them replaced a couple of years ago, since the wooden windowsills are prone to rotting from the condensation we get, though we get a lot less condensation these days with the better quality and more insulating windows.  Our garage is all-wood, and I have to paint it with preservative every year to keep it from rotting, and I had to replace a bit that had rotted away from water pooling on the concrete floor.  We can't store cans of food in it either, since they rust pretty quickly from condensation that forms on them when the air warms during the day while they're still cold from the night.  Do you have termite problems where you are?

The Hyatt looks like a hospital, all it needs is a helipad.

Alot of this newer construction scares me, seems like they don't care how the hell it's made as long as it's up quickly and they can start making money.

I like the first one, but there is too much detail. If you are going to go minimalist, go all the fucking way.

We don't have as bad as moisture problem they have in Scotland many wood houses last well over 100 years and we even have some from th 1600's in town. As far as termites go we have them and carpenter ants but they prefer wood with moisture problems and if you keep up the maintenance and keep an eye out for them your fine
