I got so sick of people ringing and not leaving a message on our machine, so I changed the greeting to:

SPEAK!<BEEP>

Most people didnt have time to hang up before the greeting had finished that they usually um'ed and ah'ed enough that we could usually work it out from the sound of their voice.

But yeah, I have a phone phobia too, and hate answering it. Probably because the phone rarely brings any good news, its usually bad new, or companies chasing up unpaid bills/rent.

Thankfully those days are mostly over, but the phobia remains.

i like phones, actually.  my record is about three and a half hours. or was it four...?

i used to have a thing about recording insane messages on the answering machine.  i still have some of the messages people recorded in response, cos they're so funny.

If I think that I will get an answering machine, I practice ahead of time in my mind what I'm going to say.  If I don't practice and then I get a machine, I usually don't know what to say, so I hang up and figure out what message to leave, then call back.

Also, some of the callers could have been wrong numbers.

I once picked up the phone and realised that it was someone who I badly didn't want to speak to.

So, I pretended to be our voice mail message and the person fell for it  :lol:

Left me a message and all

brilliant!     er, i mean 

thank the gods for caller display.  i always used to mleave my answering machine on, so i could hear who it was before i answered it, before caler display.

not that i actually get any phone calls: haven't had one for nearly a month, i reckon.

I have more trouble making a phone call than answering the phone.
