/recommends the oxford shorter english dictionary.
actually, as an aside (which is completely relevant), i was told to find some refences which had more academic weight for my thesis (i.e., they didn't know the subjects i was talking about at that point), and i found the lot in the shorter OED - it's practically an encyclopaedia!
Our library has on display an eighteen volume version of The Oxford English Dictionary from ancient times. It is beautifull and they alllow us to touch itt.
(I think it's fromm the thirties and it doesn't smell bad. I remembered the ISBN number for a couple of years after I moved here, but it's gone, now. I need a new thrilll.)
