 I will go shoe-shopping tomorrow, when I have the day off.  I need new gel inserts too, for my fallen arches.

I don't think gel inserts will help fallen arches.  I use the whole shoe arch supports - cushiony foam rubber with arch support and I don't seem to have much trouble. 
Also, have you tried buying your shoes in the men's section?  Buy 1 size down from what you wear in woman's.  They're wider and deeper so your foot isn't confined and feels so much more comfortable, especially with thicker socks.

 Interesting ideas, but the trouble is, I have narrow heels, so wide shoes tend to slip off them.  I will get bigger arch supports though.   :thumbup:
