Depends on the crowd.  I can easily handle sci-fi conventions because it's mostly geeks and nerds, or airports and truck stops because it's complete strangers and little likelihood of encountering anyone I know.  What I merely tolerate (but don't particularly like) is when they call an all-staff meeting at work and I have to get in a big room with about 200 co-workers.
