One of the assholes who teased a tiger at the San Francisco zoo, getting the tiger and his asshole friend killed, got busted stealing Nintendo Wii controllers.  The cops had to get rough with him, too.  As someone who likes animals and volunteers at a wildlife sanctuary a couple hours a week, I was pleased to see this asshole get some comeuppance.

I could not see the scars on his head in the picture provided with the story, so I had to look for another one.



I saw that Tatiana, the tiger who mauled the brothers and their friend, had also mauled a zookeeper about a year before this incident and the wall of her enclosure was four feet too short, which is how she got out to attack the three people.

I also saw that an attorney for the the Dhaliwal brothers has filed a lawsuit against San Francisco over the mauling alleging, among other things, that a PR person hired by the zoo right after the mauling is spreading untrue rumors about their conduct just before the attack:

The Dhaliwal brothers tried to get help for themselves and their friend after the attack, but zoo employees did not call for help for more than 30 minutes:

The two brothers who survived the Christmas Day tiger attack that killed their 17-year-old friend frantically sought to get help for more than 30 minutes before the zoo workers finally called 911, an attorney representing the pair said Tuesday in the first account of the event from the victims.

"The whole thing is mind-boggling," said attorney Mark Geragos, who related what he had been told about the events that left Carlos Sousa Jr. dead and his clients, Paul Dhaliwal, 19, and Kulbir Dhaliwal, 23, injured.

"They were out there for 30 to 35 minutes and nobody takes them seriously - especially when there was blood. It's incredible," Geragos said....

After reporting the incident at the cafe and to the guard, the brothers were attacked again by the tiger as they were waiting outside the cafe for someone to help. Geragos said it was about 45 minutes from the time the three young men were first attacked until help finally arrived.

Employees of the Terrace Cafe refused to allow the Dhaliwal brothers to come inside the cafe after the attack, although they did provide towels to stop the bleeding, and Kulbir Dhaliwal was attacked by the tiger a second time outside the cafe while he was trying to help his brother after his 911 call pleading for an ambulance:

I can see why they are suing the city now.

I absoutely agree that people should not yell at the animals to get their attention, but zoos should realize that people do that almost every day and make the enclosures safe enough to keep the animals from getting out even if people do yell at them.  When someone is paying to come into a zoo, they should not be mauled by a tiger because of the zoo's negligence.  Furthermore, the employees should have let the two young men come inside the cafe, even though they were closed, and they would not have been mauled a second time.  If they had believed them and called 911 sooner, then Carlos Souza, Jr. might have been saved.  As it was, they called 911, but said that they thought the story was made up by crazy people.

The attitude of the zoo is reflected in dispatch logs of the events of that night. The first call to fire officials gave no sense of urgency, even suggesting the whole thing might be the product of a deranged person's imagination. Law enforcement authorities familiar with the incident say the vague nature of that first call meant that the incident was not given immediate priority.

The early report on the police log casts doubt on the incident, suggesting that zoo authorities considered the information unreliable.

"Zoo personnel dispatch now say there are two males who the zoo thinks ... are 800 (code for mentally disturbed) and making something up ... but one is in fact bleeding from the back of the head," according to a police log entry at 5:10 p.m.

The place I volunteer at strictly forbids people from just coming and walking around without escort.  (We've got tigers, too, but even the smallest animals there will gladly rip your face off.)  If you're a visitor there, a volunteer has to be with you at all times.  (Guided tours only, with rules clearly explained and also a signed agreement to those rules.)  People still manage to be stupid, though, which is why I decided to only volunteer there on the one day of the week it's closed to the public.

BTW, the suits make those guys look like mobsters.  (Not quite.  You're supposed to wear a tie.  If you don't have a knot style memorized, you can always find instructions on the internet and print them out, so there's no excuse.)
