You have HFA, Flo.

Odeon I am curious why you think Flo has HFA, as I was aware HFA/AS are much the same thing. Although one could say somebody was say a higher functioning autistic, medium functioning or lower functioning autistic.

Several things, actually. First of all, he was diagnosed HFA by two (count 'em) professionals. Second, I've been observing him for two years and the evidence is pretty conclusive.

His IQ is most likely somewhere in the "normal" range--most of his problems here have to do with communication as such, not with a lack of intelligence--but he also doesn't have the slightest clue about social interaction. I've only observed him online, but if his sister is to be believed he displays fairly typical autistic behaviour IRL as well.

And btw, I know that there is no such thing as a "HFA diagnosis". The formal dx is likely "autistic disorder", with test results indicating an IQ in the normal range.

My diagnosis is "High Functioning Autism" (those exact words)

There's no such dx in the manuals, though.

My previous dx was Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The HFA diagnosis was according to the DSM-IV-TR.

That's interesting because there is no such dx in it. The text has been revised, especially in regards to AS, but there is no HFA separated from Autistic Disorder.

I asked my psyche last visit and she says HFA does not exist as a diagnosis in the strictest sense, but it does as a layman's term. It is used mainly to indicate that the functional IQ of a particular case (person) is average or above. Applying it to all of us with higher than normal IQs, like my kids (and you) is misleading, because but there is evidence that functionality is related more to IQ than to various disorders. Obviously her studies are not yet conclusive, but it sounds reasonable to me, being a sorta smart guy with a lot of issues, but some limited successes ... meh.

My psych did say something about "HFA" vs "Autistic Disorder" as diagnoses but I forget what it was that she said :/

Hey..Isn't this essentially questioning my diagnosis? Doesn't that mean this thread is dead? :P

Aren't most "officially" DX'ed as PDD-NOS, then with the unofficial AS or HFA or whatever which is the real DX?
