Giving places/stuff/people nicknames
« on: March 04, 2008, 03:18:05 AM »
I give places nicknames all the time, something my Dad does too and so did my ex. My dad calls Mt. Hood The Hooter. I never understood it, nor my mother and my brothers. He called our Schnauzer Shit for Brains but her real name is Yawnie. He calls McDonalds McDoogles.

I call places:

Jack in the Box=Jack Off in the Box, Jack Ass in the box
Starbucks=Starfucks, starbicks
Fred Meyers=Freddie's
Wal-Mart=Wally-Mart, The Wall World, Wally World
Plaid Pantry=Plaid Panties Plade Pantry
Bi-Mart=Bisexual Mart

In Spokane:

Ferguson's Cafe=The Benny & Joon diner, Fergies, Ruthie's Diner
Peaceful Valley neighborhood=The Benny & Joon neighborhood
RiverFront Park=The Benny & Joon park
Benny's Automotive Service=Benny's Car Clinic (used to be that name anyway until the owner decided to change the name in late 2006)
Hillyard Neighborhood=Hill Yard
Mt. Vernon Apartment=Ruthie's building

And of course I give the city nicknames; The Benny & Joon town, Spookane, Mozart and the Whale town, and of course this:

People:

Johnny Depp=Sam
Mary Stuart Masterson=Joon, MSM
Aiden Quinn=Benny
Julianne Moore=Ruthie
Alex Plank=The Alex Man, The Plank Guy
Endersdragon=The Bry Man (his real name is Brian)
Devin=The Dev Man
Ozymandias=Ozy

In Benny & Joon:

Claudia=Deaf girl mute girl (she has no lines in the movie so as a joke I say she is deaf)
Mike=The Mike Man
Joon=The mentally ill

Pets:

Michelle=Mechelle( as pronounced in the Beatle song "Michelle"), Michelleski (my dad called her that too so I adopted that nickname)
Peppersalt(our former cat)=Pepsi, Pepper
Huckleberry Hound=Huck, Huckleberry, Huck a roo, Huckle
Maggie=Magers, the magers
Pepper=Pep
Yawnie=Yawners, the yawners, the yawn machine

I used to work with a guy who would just make up names for people then call them that the rest of the job it wasn't alway popular ::)

When I was working in photography, I often tried to remember the names of everyone in the session while the session was going on. That was not really a problem at first, but when I started going to people's houses to photograph for three hours at a family re-union or something, I foound myself committing to memory thirty to fifty or more names in an afternoon. Not too much of a problem to do, because I kick ass at that matching cards game where you turn over two cards at a time, looking for a match. I can mentally put people into positions and remember their names that way.

The problems arose when I became very busy and tried to do three or four families in one weekend. I often carried over names from the previous family to the next one. It's not really embarrassing, but it can be insulting to some people to call their kid a wrong name, even if they are almost identical to the last Jordan that you met.

I began to call everyone by comicbook television or movie names. Of course, I learned properly the names of the contact person and the one who writes the check for my services, but everyone else became Big Bird, or Moe or Curly or Donatello, or Johnwayne or Terminator or Luke or Princess Leia or Obiwan or Bert or Ernie .....

I could transfer that set of names to my memory instantly, keep them straight (since I named them myself) and not get them mixed up when I went to the next sitting.

Yes, call me an asshole, but I stopped getting people's names wrong (who were paying me to photograph them) and pissing people off, which made me even more of an asshole.
Instead, I was able to put on the mask of a clown while I was dealing with my own stress and get it all done from a more technical perspective, which IS my true talent.

I fucking own light! Photography is one of my lifelong interests. I have tried living withought a camera (actually I have several, still, but they cost too much to operate in my present situation) and it's just not working. I will clear this up, soon.

Everybody gets a nickname!!

I'm horrible at making up nicknames, especially when someone wants me to. When I was doing caricatures I'd use other tricks, like "How do you spell your name?" LOL - even when it was Bob or Joe.
You'll never self-actualize the subconscious canopy of stardust with that attitude.
