For example, my Calandale@yahoo account was free,
but I used it as my main account, for a long time. Now,
it's just a spam-eater, because of all the crap I've accumulated.

Hell, just visiting some sites, they'll steal your cookies, and get
your mail from them. Which is why cookie-based e-mail accts suck.

what is a cookie based account? what is a noncookie one? is gmail cookiebased? hotmail?

I think they both work off cookies. Anything that doesn't use https probably does,
and leaves enough info that the account is easily traced by a sniffer. Though, they
might have gotten to encrypting that kind of information. I dunno. I haven't
been looking at packets for a few years.
