Bobby Fischer, chess world champion between 1972 and 1975, an aspie if I ever read about one, and one of my childhood heroes, died at 64 yesterday in a Reykjavik hospital. There was never a better chess player.

I wouldn't be surprised. He had a lot of the characteristics. We'll never know, though.

Actually he pretty much created professional chess. Without him, today's chess players would have day jobs.

This is the first i have had heard about this.
I think "My 60 Memorable Games" is probably the best chess book i have read.
Not the only chess player to become paranoid and psychotic either.

I figure a genius mind is more likely to have problems than an ordinary mind, in the same way that the engine in a race car is going to have more problems than the engine in an ordinary car.  Basically, if you've got one, you've got to really take care of it.  Looking at the discussion over on Rotten, I gather that his prejudices were simply directed at whoever happened to screw him over in life.  (e.g. He was anti-semitic because the people who stole some money and expensive stuff from his storage unit just happened to be Jewish.)  Trying to make sense of a senseless world will drive you fucking bonkers.  I'm sorry to hear that happened to him, but as far as I'm concerned he was a damn good chess player above all else, and his shortcomings were incidental.

It is tragic that he went insane and stopped doing chess professionally.   Him dying isn't a surprised, as I would have thought his death would be earlier (well being he went insane supposedly).   Being a recluse is awesome though.
