Bought something stupid online

The device itself is well worth the money, but here's the thing:  The cable in my dorm is broken somehow so I can't use it.

It works with over the air broadcasted HDTV signals as well.   The local channels here are all broadcasted in HD over the airwaves.   My grandfather has the appleTV, he likes it so far.   Your mac is a PC... HDTV tuner cards are pretty damn cheap.   Sucks to hear your cable is broken in this regard.   You need a HDTV subscription to get HD anyways, analog cable TV should be fine though.

I wanted to replace the TV with my computer so I would have more space.  They claim it works with consoles without latency issues so I can use it for that too.  I'm thinking about trying to receive HD signals with it but I need an antenna.

Except the cable reception in my dorm sucks so I don't use the tv anyways so I probably won't use this.

I wouldn't think that buying an amplifier was stupid, anyway.
Hell, I just spent a whole day working in close quarters and took some blown speakers in trade. That sounds pretty stupid on the surface, too. I can fix them, though. Turns out that two of them actually work, but they exhibit a thermal response, so they will be rebuilt as well.

What does the box amplify?

It came in.  Works much better than the last TV tuner I got.  (NEVER BUY A PINNACLE TUNER)
