that's cuz religion is not balanced. all the religions are some people's viewpoints. not objective. you have to be your own religion.

Years ago, I used to enjoy imagining the perfect cast for a film adaptation.  Back then I thought Gweneth Paltrow for Katerina; Angelina Jolie as Grushenka; William Shatner (for some bizarre reason) as the dad; Ralph Fiennes as Ivan; Brad Pitt as Alyosha; Anthony Hopkins (maybe) as Zosima; and Alan Rickman as Smerdyakov.  Never could come up with a good Dmitri, though.

As a kid, I was raised evangelical protestant (assemblies of god), then catholic.

Then I went to college, and got over both.

I still think there's probably a god, and probably some afterlife.  Dunno exactly what I believe, but I tend to think that Jesus prolly existed at least as a historical figure, and if so, he was a really smart, cool dude.  I also think that human life has value, as does kindness/mercy/etc.  Which was TOTALLY deemphasized in the assemblies of god churches; it was kinda focal with the catholic churhces, but it seems like there's an awful lot of red tape to get to the core ideas.

Plus I think the new pope's an ass.   

I met a church-goer a few months ago. She didn't believe in sex without love. I wouldn't recommend it, at least she was honest though.

I still don't get why "yes, I'll fuck without being married, but only if I'm infautated and lusting after you to the point where I'm not thinking clearly and extremely vulnerable" seems like a moral compromise to Christians who want to screw.

Too bad, you could have consoled her guilt afterwards.   Tell her what a bad girl she has been.   You will have to replace the Hail Marys with something else for her to do.

I have no idea why Shatner stuck in my head that way!  Something about him seems so dissipated and decadent to me, but then I've never watched Star Trek so most other people may have a different opinion!   

I think Alyosha was the one similar to Myshkin, very pure and saintly.  Dmitri was the sexy beast!  Johnny Depp has definitely got the talent and range, but he still seems too self-contained to be the right Dmitri.  I'm thinking someone more like Gary Oldman back in the day.  I think my ovaries may be trying to do the casting on this one!
