i dont think it will make a blind bit of difference tbh. the middle classes will still use their greater ability to play the system to get their kids into high performing 'magnet' schools anyway.

It would make all the other schools around you better, because the top quartile wont have been creamed off, leaving the remaining majority to languish. Asides, that would be the first of many steps.

In short its called the class system that still effectively perpetuates our society. The idea is a certain higher social class can monopolise their own set of schools and after that the plum university places, at the expense of the rest of the society. Its little better than the black vs white thing you have in the US as far as I am concerned.

No, but you do have to be in a grammar school area firstly to get into one, and most students need extra help to do well in it. Obviously those with middle class parents will pay for tutors and the like. Plus, you could have been unlucky and not passed the test.
