I would try cleaning the disk first.  Do you see scratches on it?

Don't DVD players need cleaning sometimes if they have played too many dirty DVDs with fingerprints or dust on them?

There is a lens inside the player, which is like the "pick-up or sensor" for the laser, that can become cloudy with dust. It should probably be cleaned by a professional, though, since the machine will have to be taken apart. It is a little dangerous to take them apart yourself, because they are actually assembled by robots, using jigs to perfectly align the cabinet pieces. Most of the cheaper ones are made this way and once you take them apart, the doors don't line up anymore or the internal mechanism shift and they will not work well anymore.

The thing is - if your machine is a couple of years old, you can buy a better machine for fifty bucks or an upgrade to a much better machine for around a hundred, these days. It will cost nearly a hundred for a cleaning at most places!

Excellent points, DirtDawg.  I did not realize that it would be so expensive to have a DVD player cleaned.  I thought you could buy a cleaning disc to do it yourself, but that might not do as good a job. 

You could try playing other DVDs in the player to see if the player has a problem.  You could try playing the disc in another player to see if it's the disc that has the problem.

If you clean a disc, it's important to clean it with a clean soft lint-free cloth or disc wipe from the inside to the outside in a radial direction, never in a circular direction.

Imagine the disc is a clock.  Put the cloth or wipe in the middle of the clock and move in a straight line to the 12.  Then go back to the middle and move in a straight line to the number one.  Back to the middle and out to the number two...

I have used scratch repair kits myself, and have had no problems.  Whatever is cheaper do it, but make sure t hat that the scratch repair kit don't kill the DVD.

Those cleaning disks don't really help much. They only clean the center of the "lens/eye."  A technician can get in there with a swab and remove all the dust and accumulated oils from the lens.

The cost, the last time I had one looked at was seventy nine bucks to open it up and that included a cleaning, but nothing else. If there is actually something wrong with the unit, the repairs would be more.

I have had excellent luck with scratch removal services, though, like Randy mentioned. I often buy used disks of rare items and sometimes they are scratched. Things I get from the library are often too scratched to play properly.
 
The guy where I work said they use one of the forty dollar "Disk Doctors" off the shelf, nothing special to it.

I knew all alone what I can do about my disc skipping. I just wanted to make a random post about my obsession. I used the scratch remover kit. I have the cream and the cloths and I squirted some on the disc and used the cloths and wiped the disc and wiped the stuff off. I use that first before I move onto replacing the item if the scratch remover stuff didn't work. My bf also has the scratch remover machine. You put the disc in it and put some water on the disc and turn the handle and the disc turns slowly. My brothers had one of those when I was 16 and they broke it later on few years later.
