I have a four volume Oxford English (obviously, severely abridged) Dictionary that lists "hate" and "loathe" as synonyms and my quickish google search turns up even more of the same. I can't seem to determine proper etymology, which, to me, is next to godliness.

I see those two words as quite different and I use them differently.
What are the meanings?
