Also returned a jacket a friend lent the Princess Royal and gave her a TShirt I really didn't like.  She in turn gifted me with 2 pounds of baby carrots.

It wasn't bartering.  It was more like, "Can you take this off my hands?"  We do this a bit since it's only her and her daughter here and we're 3 in my family.  Sometimes I'll send over leftovers (I know, I know).

I royally proclaim that she should have everything she wishes today (within reason of course).  Is it a good coincidence that she's skating competitively today? 

It was a coincidence but it also didn't happen. He throat was sore so she decided not to compete.

ITA. I think forcing kids to "stick with" hobbies ruins all the fun.

Yeah, they should be allowed to decide for themselves. Of course, sometimes you have to encourage them, considering that the required gear will often cost a ton of money and they shouldn't give up too easily, but there's no point in forcing them to do something they don't want to do.

Had a fun lunchtime watching an excavator pick up really heavy junk and pile it into a tip truck (I was in my car eating lunch like I sometimes do). The truck almost got tipped over
