Why do some whales go to shallow seawater areas and strand ashore? Subsequently dying there. What causes these mammals to take such high risks and often fail so dramatically?

(um, me thinking and watching TV, hearing about 'the big not sure why' this sometimes happens)

going covent garden in the morning though, which should be cool. there are a few of us going. hopefully it will stop me panicking about afterwards

 Maybe something goes wrong with their sonar or whatever they have to direct them.   :dunno:
