My mom was a diabetic and she was more like the first person you described.

The first day she was in the hospital, they brought her a needle and she injected herself.

Her younger sister was a diabetic since she was 14 so my mother already had some familiarity with the injections and the signs of an insulin reaction, so that may be why she didn't waste time feeling sorry for herself.

I think that some people are just more equipped mentally to hold their heads up and fight hard to the last wiggle they can muster, while some others seem to have begun to die inside even before their first trial and seem to give up after one slight mis-step.

I think that you are right about that, but I think that maybe it is the challenges that make people resilient.

A person who has never faced any challenges in their lives may be the type to give up too easily when the first one comes along.

I don't think so. I think a large part of it is innate, and a person who's never faced challenges has just never had the chance to discover whether they're resilient or not.
