Depends on what kind of AC you want and how big your house is.

I just had a Trane person give me an estimate of nearly $10,000 for an AC, a new furnace, and air cleaner and I thought that was much too high, but I have not had a second estimate yet.  He frowned when I said that I was getting another estimate, so I think he knew his estimate was high.

He's probably right that we need to replace our furnace, because it's is as old as the house as far as I know.  It has worked fine so far, but it is over 20 years old.  He said that we would have to replace the blower anyway to have it be powerful enough to blow the air conditioned air upstairs, and that was a big fraction of the cost of a new furnace.

Just bought a room AC for the living room $399.  I could put in central AC but I would have to redo the duct work in the basement.  When the furnace goes I will get a combo one thats gas then it will be probably $10k

Seems everyone has stairs and basements.

We used a water cooler/humidifier last summer, glad we did. Only thing was we had to keep filling it with water, I had to get up in the night to do that.

I have a/c in my living room- I would love to be able to have it in my bedroom instead, but because I'm on the first floor of a (four-story?  I've lived here nearly a year and never even used the elevators or stairs) large apartment building and if there's an a/c above mine, it will drip onto mine in a form of auditory chinese water torture that's impossible to sleep through.

My grandmother remains convinced I have central air conditioning although I keep telling her I don't.  I don't think it's old age where she can't remember things; I just think she thinks I'm wrong.   :laugh:

Eat, yes. Stairs, no. It's been a reallly rough day and I haven't eaten since last night's meal.

What I was thinkking though was that I am going to get a baseball bat and beat the fuck out of my car.

(Those two thoughts are not related, I think not, anyway.)

We have an evaporative cooler and it really helps here, but it does not work well on hot and humid days.

The main reason that we are looking into central AC is my husband's and daughter's allergies.
