Flo, the reason why people try to say "all that matters is what you think" to other people is because most people place too much importance on what others think, but they really dont expect you'll totally stop caring what others think.
The way it is SUPPOSED to work is, you are SUPPOSED to care what other people think. And no amount of telling you that all that matters is what you think is SUPPOSED to actually convince you of that. It is just supposed to be an encouragement that something someone said or did that was cruel to you doesn't matter, it isn't intended to give you license to be a total ass.
