i need a new firewall app.

What are you using now?

guarddog (a kde app for linux). it's a good firewall but it's not been updated to handle certain name changes in the latest kernels. a little googling revealed that i'll have to wait before updating my kernel, if i want to continue using guarddog.

Is the box that guarddog is on used as a dedicated firewall or does it host other apps too?

Haven't heard of that one.  But then, I'm a little out of date on linux firewall tools.  I use 2 layers of hardware-based router/firewalls.  What little time I did spend with linux firewalls, I just edited iptables scripts manually.

I've heard good things about smoothwall, but that's a whole distro.  I assume you don't want to re-install the whole box just for a firewall.

no, i'd rather not. i have a nat firewall, too, but i like having an additional layer of security. i'm too lazy to edit iptables manually, though, and i want a gui.

i'll have to do some more research on the subject and see if there's a firewall that's good enough for what i need.
