I'm pissed at my mouse.
It drifts, so if I start to scroll and pause for a second to re-read something on a page, I often move my taskbar to the side, a semi-useless Windows feature to me. It happened once when my wife was reading and she freaked out, thinking she had "broken" the computer.
 

I've cleaned it and the pad, replaced the pad with a different color (it's an optical mouse), tried it without a pad, re-installed the firmware ... still the fucking cursor drifts to the side.

I love my optical mouse.  I wrestled with roller mice for years and years, and they never worked very well, but my optical mouse is pixel-perfect.

What kind of optical mouse? Cos it sounds it's broken.

It's a Logitech, Model #  M-BJ58. I've had it for about three years. It seems to work perfectly, except for that one annoyance.

Have a look at this page. Scroll down to the bottom of the page--your mouse is mentioned.

Logitech also had this about erratic movement, and it's always a good idea to use the latest drivers to your mouse. I don't know if your mouse uses SetPoint or Mouseware, though.

I, only in the last few days, considered the possibility that it could be software related. I will try for the latest "mouseware" and see what happens. I use the USB connection so the guys that said it can't happen there are goofy.

Those help guys are pretty funny, eh?

I'm not ready to give up yet.
