One of my chemistry professors told me that the name RDX was actually an inside joke during WWII  standing for Roosevelts Dandy EXplosive. :lol:

It stands for Research Department EXplosive. In Sweden we usually use the German name Hexogen.

It was invented in Germany in 1894, so Hexogen would actually be more appropriate.

I hadn't realized it was that old of a discovery either. I'm sure the Tim Lewis books I had probably mentioned how old the discovery was, but I haven't read them for about 15 or more years now.

Most high explosives are actually late 19th Century or even earlier. One of the few exceptions is TNGU, that was invented around 1970.

That's one I have not heard of. My books covered Nitric esters, RDX, PETN, TACC and such. The Tim Lewis books were good for covering additional precautions that TM 31-210 and 5-25 did not.
