Do you think that being selfish of oneself guarantees a better chance at finding happiness than to act selfless towards others?

What can you say about the large influx of foreign people coming over into this country (the UK overall)? Do you feel rather xenophobic about it, or do you think it's a good thing?

now that you are thirty, you may be as dirty as you like.

I don't think being selfish gives you a better chance at happiness, but I also don't believe that acting selfless does either- I think you need to try find a balance between the two.

welcome back!

did you have a good time?  ("good" being relative, of course, as holiday+kids is exhausting, etc.).

Yeah I had a great time, despite having to fly over there on the day all the latest 'terrorist' crap started and being stressed cos so many flights were being cancelled.  Its nice to sleep in a proper bed again though- my parent's house is still half built so we were camping in what will be their garden.   Its actually taken me a few days to adjust to being back in England- its so much nicer over there.

Sorry I missed this one before- to be honest its never been something that I've noticed a great deal- might be the area I live in or the schools I went to, but from being a kid I've been used to living in a 'multicultural' area so its nothing new to me.

how are your parents doing?

They're doing really well- I think the French lifestyle is suiting them, although the fact that almost all the local tradesmen were having a month long holiday has been driving my obsessed Dad nuts- he's got to the point where he needs roof trusses and he's struggling to find anyone to make them.   Their house is coming along well though- they've almost finished the bricking (it would have been finished over a week ago but they ran out of bricks and the builder's yard is shut for 2 weeks).   My mum's asthma is also a lot better, they've only been there about 3 months but the cleaner air is doing wonders for her.

Despite the fact I miss them so much, I'm really glad they've moved out there-  my dad has worked long hours (and been away from home most of the week) for years as a HGV driver and its good to see him being able to slow down a little (well, he will do once the house is finished anyway).

HGV= heavy goods vehicle.  In his last job he was driving a big articulated lorry.
