A NEW DIRECTION IN LIFE! (I dropped out of university)
« on: September 05, 2007, 09:51:45 PM »
I began studying Electronic Engineering in 2003. Did ok not great 1st year, failed most subjects 2nd year and was then thinking of changing courses to pursue something more creative. Should have followed my intuition then. Anyways, I stuck at it for another year and passed all the subjects I'd previously failed. Also picked up a few 3rd year subjects.

2006 I took a year off. Went to Canada for 6 months for a snowboarding/working holiday. Went by myself, most people would probably go with friend(s). That was a very challenging but rewarding experience. Spent the rest of the year as a ski/snowboard instructor here in Oz (yes we have ski resorts out there in the desert  ::) then working at my old job in a hardware store.

This year, I enrolled back into Electronic Engineering, but this time with a little more direction. I was interested in a new offshoot of EE, Biomedical Engineering. I also picked up some Sound Art electives, as music is my main creative outlet.
I did ok in 1st semester this year, but it was a struggle. It's always been a struggle for me to do work in my own time. I'm naturally bright and have tended to rely on that to get me through schooling rather than actual hard work. So I do well on exams but poorly on coursework. At high school this meant I sometimes passed exams A+ but failed subjects, but they still bumped me into the next grade year after year, nothing changing.

Anyways, the reason for this post is that I dropped all my engineering classes last week, only staying enrolled in a sound art elective.
For next year, I will be applying to study (you guessed it...) Sound Art! This course is in the school of fine arts (akin to sculpture, painting, drawing, metal smithing etc). I'm at my most productive when I'm being creative.

Hopefully I wont be as miserable anymore, and I hope to stop taking Zoloft soon as well.

Unless he's in silverchair, it's already better.

Good luck man. My sis just started at an art school last month. My best friend (prolly an aspie) goes to the same one but is looking to transfer because he didn't like it too much... just keep your head up and don't get discouraged. I was once an EET major too. Still interested in it, but only as a hobby or during school occupation.

I've joined another band who are much better :)
I'll leave the first band in a couple of months as we have a gig booked for october 21st.

I'm possibly joining another band too, but it may end up being an electronic music project.

I'm really unhappy with my current housing accomodations, and I'm studying to become a teacher...and I don't think that's what I want to do anymore. I'm not sure what I want to do that's realistic. My dream has always been to be a singer.
