I didn't know that pretending to be mildly autistic was "in". :orly:

Yeah, it's the "in" thing, like ADD/ADHD was last decade.

They just think they have it because they are A) told they have it and were misdiagnosed B) They think they have it after reading about it.

I doubt a child just decides they have AD/HD and claim to their parents and teachers they do just so they get diagnosed.

Sometimes, I have doubts about whether I am autistic or not. But I know one thing: I despise emos.

I may act like an emo sometimes, but I do get quite depressed a lot. And crave attention a lot. Maybe that's why I like to talk to myself so damn often. I just can't keep my mouth shut when I think that no one else can hear me. Every thought is usually verbalized to myself. I try to stop doing it, but it usually happens almost unconsciously. Waspies. That's gonna give me something to talk about with myself. Damn it!

Yeah, it's the "in" thing, like ADD/ADHD was last decade.

Asperger's, more specifically, is the "in" diagnosis, ot my understanding.  Autism, in general, may be an "in" "cause," but right now I don't think it's anywhere near as notorious for being "that diagnosis they give to spazzy geniuses."

Ironically it looks to be stricken from the DSM-V, whenever the hell that actually comes out.

They just think they have it because they are A) told they have it and were misdiagnosed B) They think they have it after reading about it.

I doubt a child just decides they have AD/HD and claim to their parents and teachers they do just so they get diagnosed.
Adults sometimes 'decide' they have ADHD for somewhat similar reasons, actually- or decide to pursue a diagnosis that will allow them to be prescribed speed, legally.  Far more frequently, though, with ADHD, adults (and others involved in the care of the ADHD diagnosis candidates) will pursue a diagnosis of ADHD for a child in the hopes that it will 'fix' problematic behavior.  (And sometimes Mommy wants her speed, but she needs Joey to be diagnosed to get it.)

Kids don't tend to want to be given diagnoses, or to be drugged so that their behavior is acceptable to those around them.  ADHD is, to my understanding (as well as in my personal opinion), extremely overdiagnosed, for reasons mentioned above- far more often there is some type of environmental/adjustment/trauma issue going on.  (How often depends on who you ask, but I very much believe the vast majority, albiet I am not saying I don't think some cases are legitimate.)

I don't think Asperger's/Autism has quite the same issue with overdiagnosis, because there's not quite as much motivation for that diagnosis to be sought.  However, there are plethora issues- again, including adjustment and/or trauma-related issues- that can produce symptoms in children that can mimick ASDs.

Sometimes I question my ADD diagnoses because it was over diagnosed then. I was hyper, I fidgeted, I had difficulty concentrating, I had tons of homework every night more than other kids, I never got my work done in school while other kids get free time because they got their work finished. I rarely finished my school work in school. Mom had to place me in a room that was quiet and keep me away from the noise like the TV and my brothers playing. Lot of things distracted me then and I had difficulty time concentrating and focusing.

Aspies can be hyper too and maybe me fidgeting was me stimming and maybe me getting distracted was due to sensory issues. They may end up with tons of homework due to their learning style or because they want to do other things so they have troubles focusing on their school work.

Was this ADD or AS? You decide.

AS and ADD symptoms do look alike.

It's supposed to be ASD with levels of degree, correct? Maybe that will keep the LFAs from calling the HFAs autistic wannabees.

i cannot relate to this thread at all

ive never in my life met another diagnosed aspie.
never :S
on the contrary, i know 2 people who are totally aspie, but undiagnosed, and one was unaware untill i suggested it to her, to explain some of her numerous obsessive quirks.
(no she isnt faking being aspie, you angry people, i suggested it to her, and she had never heard the word before. i had to explain the whole thing)

where are you guys that you are surrounded by these fake aspies?

Just assumed they were talking about people online, Zeg.

still, how many ARE there online to be so many fakes?
people are different

WP has what 30 000 members? isnt that a likely number of aspies out of europe (700 million people) + north america (350 million)

even online, i cant say ive seen people who are glaring fakes. plus, online, offline, we still live "irl" at some point :I

Yes. It never made much sense to me either, but I didn't think anyone meant fake as much as the the diagnosed vs the undiagnosed, autism vs aspergers and so on.

I was that way too when I was in school. I wouldn't do my schoolwork because I was very easily distracted. I would have tons of homework which probably never got finished. I had serious behavioral issues at school with not paying attention to and disrupting class. Or just plain getting into trouble by acting like an ass. The problems I had at home might have a lot to do with the troubles I had at school. My parents were emotionally neglectful and I never learned how to act properly. I was and still am quite hyperactive. I'm afraid that the problems still affect me in community college. At least there's really no in-class work. But I would usually play video games or fool around on the Internet instead of studying or doing the homework, just like in the past. I also have a tendency to put things off until the last minute. I'm such a childish fool.

no i know, its "real aspie" vs "faking douchebag", but ive never encountered the faker, in my opinion, neither "irl" or online.
how do you bust a "fake" online anyway?
"Are you into trains?!?"
"um no :S"
"YOUR SUCH A FAKE!!!!"

and so what if people got vague symptoms, if they wanna hang out w aspies, be thankful for it, instead of getting all elitist :D

I don't know enough about the biology of each to be totally sure of this, but I'd imagine in cases like that the "ADHD" would largely be a byproduct of the AS.  Are you on stimulant meds/were you ever, Kit?  if so, what did they do for you?

Nobody ever suspected I had ADHD (a miracle, considering how much I was in 'the system' as a kid), but I think one of the things that made the idea of AS stick out was the sensory issues I get when I'm anxious (which, when I was a kid, was pretty damn much constantly).  I'm a great deal more evened out now, but I still do get patches of anxiety as well panic attacks/meltdowns/whatever you want to call them, and during those in particular I become super-sensitive to noise and tactile stimuli.  If that type of sensitivity was a constant for me I can imagine I'd find concentration far more difficult than I normally do.

(Then again, of late I've been so stressed that I have virtually no working memory an very little ability to concentrate- I basically have artificial ADD at the moment.  People who know me well have noticed it, but also know why.  I'm assuming it will go away when I'm under better conditions, and not assuming "OMFG I HAVE LATE-ONSET PRIMARILY INATTENTIVE ADHD PLEASE GIVE ME ADDERALL ASAP!")

Ironically it looks to be stricken from the DSM-V, whenever the hell that actually comes out.

That's funny. Maybe it's not a situation of, hey you're fake; but rather, hey you're not just like me. Maybe some have just as rigid an idea of what is AS, same as those outside of the spectrum? Not sure. Have seen LFAs before on wp that said the site was full of fakers, none autistic. It struck me as kind of the same thing as this.
