Most people there live underground to avoid the extreme heat.



In parts of Turkey many people have homes that are carved into volcanic tuff.  It's a stone that is easily carved.  I'v also seen the same type of caves cut into the same rock in New Mexico.  They were dug into a cliff that faced south for solar exposure.  Also on the Greek Island of Santorini, many homes are also carved into the volcanic tuff left by a massive eruption approx. 3500 years ago.

It makes sense in a hot climate as the temperature is fairly constant at a certain depth.  It would be a problem in a place with wet climate with the humidity.  Unless you engineered it right.
