Yeah I would probably have problems maintaing eye contact already.   I don't usually look at my feet though, usually my watch which looks insane if I do it more than once haha.

I doubt they all flee.   Just like I doubt you would be alright with people run away from you, maybe if you are used to it happening.  I definitely say some weird shit sometimes that makes people uncomfortable.   I fail at thinking before I speak sometimes.

Maine, and yes, we do get triple digit temps, once in a great while.  I'm in western Maine, away from the coast, in what my wife and I call the "Hot Zone."
