One of the few good things with Sweden is that the tax on books is only 6%, since they are of "cultural value". Almost everything else in Sweden has a tax/VAT of 25% put on it, sometimes even more. Petrol, for instance, is taxed double. To the oil company you just pay about 45% of the price. 55% goes to the government  :thumbdn:

New books are expensive  ;)

That batch was 600 bucks :(

Even on amazon.com?

I'm not surprised at that price.  Professional textbooks are through the roof.

And it gets worse, once it is a book about a very specific, not often studied subject, that isn't even to be found in the library.

I'm guessing that in less than 10 years all textbooks will be "live" on computer which will make updating them instantaneous, particularly for the medical and legal professions.  Accounting doesn't seem to change as quickly as those two.  Hopefully that will drive the cost of studies down, although I'm sure the "publishers" will find some way to minimize the price cuts.

No, I could have saved about a hundred bucks going that route, but I wanted to bill it to my scholarship funds so I purchased through the University Bookstore.

OTOH, Swedish bookstores are ridiculously expensive.

Groceries, cat food.

Yes, a black DSH.  We adopted her and her sister in 2003.  My cat is Martha Mitchell, nicknamed Martha/Marty/MartyPartyGirl evolved into Martha Gras.  Her sister was Ashley elolved into Ashley Wednesday.  (Hey we're in New Orleans).

Anyway during the commotion of evacuating for Hurricane Katrina they were accidentally locked out the house (which was fortunate because they wouldn't have survived the 6 weeks we were gone.)  When we got back they had turned semi-feral.  We decided to let them outside.  While they quickly returned to their normal selves we decided to let them stay outdoor cats.  Ashley died last year, but Martha is still hanging around the house.

I trained both of them to come to a whistled cue when they were kittens.  Awfully useful for getting cats.

Addendum - She is fed and watered daily, scritched when we sit outside, not ignored.

And I bitch about the 6.35% sales tax in Connecticut  and some stuff like food, clothing under $50 and insulation  are exempt

About 2 dozen bent and dent items, most 50 cents, although I did get a large jar of grape jelly for 99 cents and 2 small cans of mushrooms for 25 cents.

Cool. :) Took me a bit to understand what DSH stood for. I have three cats to love - Dennis and Mollie at my parents' place and Liam at Ceilidh's place.
