Add a decade, for mine. Works too.
'Course, the hard drive is often what
goes.

Eh. I have my brother's old PII, which works fine.
Gotta be 10 years old now. Actually, I've never had
one die, and neither has my dad. They just get obsolete.

Funny. I'd imagine laptops are more fragile.

Believe it or not, I have a 486 that still works, perfectly. It's just slow as fuck. 25mHz, I think.

Yeah. We have a couple 486/386's. The TRS-80 with 4k is still the
big shocker though.

The problem with computers these days is that the power supplys are complete shite. They are always going tits up, especially in..... ah fuck it, they are all crap cos no one wants to spend serious ca$h on the things. Plus they lie on the damn things. 430W PSU handles more like a 250-300W, and therefore craps out and takes out as much hardware as it can with it.

Also you hear about a lot of MotherBoard that are DOA, lucky most places are pretty good with swapping them for another one.

i've had a couple of motherboards die on me.

What's worse is when they slowly die and just go weird on you.

The one I replaced in my 5yo's PC would kill the keyboard off if the BIOS settings weren't just right, like you had to manually assign IRQ's. It was an Abit BX6 I think. Plus it wouldnt take this Gigabit Card I got for it, so that's when I decided to build him up something somewhat modern, hence the ASUS M2N-E SLI AM2 Motherboard I bought a few days ago  :green:

He's happy, he can now play LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Star WarsII, both awesomely funny and enjoyable games  :vader:

i've had a couple of motherboards die on me.

Me, too. I had a PC Chips P3 board (I can't remember who bought them out, but they have a new name) and an Intel P4 board both die.

The P3 board's BIOS chip became corrupt and it would not take a flash. Doubt that was power related. On the Intel board the north bridge went south, which could have been power related, but I have a bigger power supply (650W Antec) than Intel recommended.

They were both under warranty, though. Both companies sent upgraded replacements. Intel sent me a new board pre-loaded with an upgraded processor and 512MB of RAM, if I sent them the old processor, first. I thought that was pretty damn cool.

I agree, though. In general power supply inadequacies take down all kinds of electronic equipment.
