Västerås, the capital of Västmanland county, has its name misspelled. The name doesn't have anything to do with ås, which means "low hill" but with os, that is the Latin as well as Proto-Germanic name for "mouth". The original name of the city was Västra Aros="Mouth of the western creek". The creek/small river in question is Svartån, that has it's "delta" in Västerås, where it reaches the lake Mälaren. There was also a Östra Aros, that is Uppsala today. It also has a creek, Fyrisån, that reaches Mälaren at the outskirts of the city.
Skövde in Västergötland also has its name twisted. The original name is Skades vi(h)="The place where Skade is worshipped". Skade was the goddess of hunting and winter in the Norse mythology.
The name Skade is mysterious itself. She is androgynous. The name has a masculine form, since in Old Nordic, as in Swedish still today, women's name ended with -a not -e. She is usually depicted with androgynous traits as well.
