Middle High German magedin meant "unmarried young aristocratic woman". Modern German Mädchen simply means "girl". Modern English maid means "servant girl". This is called pejoration of meaning.

Swedish kvinna means "woman". Thus English queen is an amelioration of meaning.

Oh, I found out that Francis E. Dec was right once again. It did in fact exist a short-lived Slovenian "Empire" or at least a great part of Europe populated with Slovenes: Slovensk historia Alas, the page is just in Swedish.

On this day in 1944 the big top burned in Hartford Ct killing almost 170 people.  My father was supposed to go but was sick that day.

This Swedish band, "Clenched fists", prasised Stalin as late as in the 1970's.

One of their members, Maria Ahlström, had a seat in the town council in one of the neighbour towns here as late as 2004. She was still a member of the Communist Party  ::)

N.W. European fishermen may catch 405,000,000 kilo of herring this season. I'll be eating 3 or 4 kilos of them, I reckon.
