I have heard that they "fired" Tony George as Big Cahunah, Guru, Chief, Boss Hogg, CEO or what ever the fuck from the Indianapolis Speedway. He is the guy who saved the track from a tax default loss of property and confiscation by the IRS during the eighties, when the last major economic crash made racing not so profitable and the guy who sent C.A.R.T. down the road and created the Indy Racing League.
I understand that his sisters were among those who voted against him. Yes, he has made his family many millions of dollars, by turning the racing scene at Indy into a worldwide affair, and saved the raceway from IRS disposal, brought two more annual races to town, yet he is ousted from control of the track.
On the surface, all the local redneck, low-life interviews who have made ignoramous commentary, aired statewide in the media, have stated that they remember when the race was a big deal and every one lived the Month Of May for the race.
What I remember and have witnessed is that this city, the capitol of our state, is no longer populated by old school Native Hoosiers and Indianapolis, in the business world, has become a "stepping stone/just another wrung" in the world of back-stabbing corporate ladder climbers and not that many "true hoosiers" actually live and work and pay taxes here these days and the ones who do live here, are not the big money clients who buy the massive suites at the sports events.
I used to be quite a race fan and I have seen the decline over the years in what the "tradition of racing in Indianapolis" means to the average person. It was not the fault of Tony George that the "end of an era" (a fucking amazing and important era, too) happened on his watch. I think he has been removed from office at a time when his forethought will be greatly missed.
I fully expect to see things go even further downhill from where they are now. It is no one person's fault. It is a sign of our times and no one can take full blame.
