Well, Sigmund Fraud Freud smoked cigars and got cancer and 36(!) operations of his mouth. He was kind of brave, though I don't give very much for freudianism.

Lower Saxony had the same border to the west in 962, when Otto the Great founded the first German Empire, as it has today.

Ironically Lower Saxony was re-established as a state by the Brits during the occupation after WWII.

It has its own "Land" anthem, written already in the 1920s, when Lower Saxony's bulk still consisted of the Prussian province Hannover.
