In the Roman Empire only rich men would get bald. I don't remember exactly why, but it had something to do with genetics (of course) and men then only getting bald by eating much fat.

I would rather suspect that they had some cultural idea that baldness was a sign of wealth, and then maybe would shave their heads or something, to signal this? Idunno, but this sounds like a very odd coincidence.
