Anime sucks

Because when ever I ask this question, it turns out that the person has watched some really bad anime. I think it's a common sense question for anyone who hates an entire genre.

But that implies that they have to make the effort to watch a range of anime before deciding its not for them or that just their opinion of the idea of it isn't enough to make a judgement on.  Like I said people wouldn't ask what porn people have seen before allowing them to decide that porn sucks so what makes anime different?

Or looking at it another way - I loathe opera. I have a strong aversion to the elements I associate with opera; interminably long scenes involving warbling in languages I do not speak, shrieking and wailing, melodrama. I have seen/heard very few operas, none for longer than half an hour (at which point the 'what the FUCK is this bollocks?' switch became operational). I have no intention of exposing myself to a wider range of opera in order to check that it is all shit. So with anime. With genres or styles which are very distinctive it is not necessary to assume that those who hate it just haven't seen any good anime/porn/morris dancing/etc.

I'm aware there are probably one or two anime series/films which might be enjoyable if I can get over the initial distaste, but I can live without the discovery process personally.

Orrrr, just for argument's sake, someone who professes to hate all porn could turn out to have been exposed exclusively to some particular type of fetish porn.  I'm not saying you shoudl then force them to watch "normal" porn, but it would be rather interesting to know, wouldn't it?

This is true.  You will still get porn geeks who insist that porn is great no matter what anyone else says, though.

I like anime. It sure beats the hell out of most american animation, at least in terms of creativity and maturity. At least in Japan they know that animation is a veratile medium that doesn't have to be limited to children's entertainment. The only westerners who seem to know this are Todd McFalrane and Ralph Bakshi.

don't like porn, I try and find out why, and often
am able to note that there is some non-mainstream
stuff that they might enjoy. Not that I know names
and whatnot, it just seems worth letting them know
that there's better shit out there.

I feel the same way, but more so about anime. I think because a lot of people don't really try to give it a chance, and it's a genre that has something for everyone. Still waiting for the op the list off what he's seen.

The only thing that looked familiar to me was the "Land of confusion" video, which I LOVED.  (As for the song, I grew up with the original, but I think I actually like the remake more.  It's eviller.)
