He was Finnish, no question about it, but at the time, the upper class spoke Swedish.

The upper class was Swedish, since the Swedes conquered the land during the crusades in the 12th and 13th Centuries and the official language was Swedish. Swedish is still an official language in Finland, though less than 10% of the population is Swedish-speaking.

The upper class wasn't Swedish. It was Swedish-speaking. There's a difference. If you really believe Runeberg was Swedish, you should probably read some of his work.

Compare that to the situation in Sweden, when French was the language to speak if you were a noble.

I have read the whole Fänriks Ståls sägner. I can still quote great parts of it right out of my memory. It's right in my bookshelf, less than two meters away. Yes, they were Swedish-speaking, but usually of Finnish heritage, ethnically speaking. OK, OK.
