i think that a real man needs to be motivated, not just stroked.  though, sometimes stroking is a form of motivation.

...usually other people expect it back and I don't necessarily think I am particularly good at it...therefore it feels as though the whole world wants it.

Not necessarily...he just may take the it as a reinforcement of fact.  That's how I interpret some compliments. 

If someone says something that is designed to stroke my ego, and I can't judge it as fact then it just pisses me off and confuses me sometimes.
