Some sort of injury?
« on: May 01, 2007, 03:53:34 PM »
Not to be a complete hypochondriac, but is it possible to have an untreated hairline fracture or bone injury (make your pun here) and not know it?  I banged the edge of the middle of my right forearm (when my wrist is facing me, the left edge) repeatedly against the edge of a hard surface heaven only knows how long ago (more than six months, I think, and less than two years).  It left a giagantic bruise and hurt for quite awhile and went away after awhile.  The opposite side of it (the right edge of the bone) directly across from it hurts a bit and has for a day or so; I think it happens every so often but I'm not sure.  I tend to ignore pain unless it absolutely demands attention.  Anyway, just wondering if anyone can reassure me that there's no way I fractured or chipped the bone or tore anything because it doesn't always hurt, I can still do my pushups in the morning, and it's the arm I use my mouse with so it's probably strained.

Opinions?

A hairline fracture or summat would surely have knitted by now. You've probably strained it.

My wife had unknowingly broken her
wrists, and they healed. Every now and
then, they would hurt. Nothing could
really be done about them though, and
she had no idea when it happened.

Hopefully.  I also can't imagine that I hit my arm hard enough to fracture it, unless I has osteoperosis (I shouldn't; I'm 21 and healthy and do eat dairy).

I hope that isn't what it is.

The weird thing is I have the idea that this is a recurring pain, but, as I said, I don't pay attention to pain unless it's severe so I'm not sure.

In her case, it must have happened fairly young.
She too drank a lot of milk, but her wrists were
always weak. Pissed me off, because I could
never pin her down by them, without her
yelping in pain. She didn't find out until she
was about 30.

I occasionally have an enormous bruise or even some swelling under a bruise with no recalll of how I got it and I don't bruise easily, at all. But it seems to happen when I'm concentrating on something intently, which is very difficult at times.

The first time I went to the doctor with a fractured bone in my middle finger (I was twelve), from hitting things, the x-rays revealed two other fractures in the metacarpals on one hand and another on the other (my mom insisted they x-ray the other hand, after seeing the first hand). The fractures to the metacarpals were old longitudinal compression fractures (from slugging something with a fist), which had healed, already. I had no knowledge of any pain before, but I had hit stuff all my life. So I know you CAN have a fracture and not know it.

I KNOW that I've broken my knuckles
a number of times; same with toes.
Never went to a doctor about it
though.

I was very aware of the injury when it happened; I was surprised by how long and badly it was bruised and hurt.  Whatever the pain was it's stopped now.  Hopefully it was just a strain.  This isn't just a finger; this is my freaking forearm.  if it's vulnerable to reinjury it could suck major ass.  :/

I suggest you break it and then go to the doctor to have it set properly.
And as always, these are simply my worthless opinions.

I'm sure the more you worry about it, the more it will hurt.  :police:

If it's a chip, it's probably not going to
get any worse. But it will hurt regularly.
A fracture, I'm not so sure about. Try and
remember to see if there are things that you
can do that ALWAYS hurt, even once the
current pain subsides. I doubt that all symptoms
would disappear with a break of any kind.

I also should mention that all the old breaks sing like fat opera ladies in response to changes in barometric pressure. Could it be the old, already-healed injury singing with the weather?

I don't believe that they can tell if an old break has healed properly, without an x-ray, but it might be worth checking into if it persists. If it is an old break that HAS healed properly, it should not be any more vulnerable to breaking again. If it hasn't healed properly, that would definitely suck.

The fact that the weather is starting to turn warm lately is why I thought of a break, because in MA warmer weather usually means more humid weather.  It doesn't hurt very much now.  I would guess a fracture rather than a chip if it is the bone because it's on the other side of where the impact occurred.  It doesn't hurt if I rub the sides of my arm hard (pressing my fingers in); perhaps that's a hopeful sign.

I know I seem like a hypochondriac, but the initial injury was very worrisome, so now anything involving that arm in a way that seems like it could be related bothers me, more on an emotional level than because it's unignorably painful.
